Introduction

Life is not a choice. When one is accustomed to life's fundamental essentials...food, clothing, money, shelter, and transportation...it is difficult to personally feel the grinching effects of being deprived of life's basic necessities. Although one may consider these assets in life to be the norm, it's not always the reality. There are thousands of families throughout communities facing the heartbreak of poverty every day. And even though help agencies and ministries work long, hard, endless hours to meet the needs of a vast number of people, their sources and resources are limited. There is definitely a place in society for additional support to fill the void.

Millions of families live in the dark shadows of poverty, and it is not by choice. Struggling to free oneself from the painful, pinching grip of its viseis not an easy task. Povert crosses all boundaries. It flows far beyond its dry cracked riverbed, draining life from one's soul. Its sharp, piercing thorn penetrates deep and hard. Poverty shatters dreams. The truth about this dark, cold environment called poverty is that is slowly destroys one's emotional stability and physical strength when it attacks.

Yes, poverty is a strong, thriving link in the chain of society. However, agencies and ministries striving to provide services and offer resources are relentlessly hammering away to weaken its link that grips families and holds them bound. They work daily to improve the conditions of life for ones living in this motionless cycle of time. Too often those who live in this cycle find that life is controlled by the conditions poverty breeds.

Life may not be a choice, however, living without the basic necessities only cultivates feelings of hopelessness.It rips families apart and destroys the foundation of one's existence. The quality of every life in one's community impacts all who live there. It is the adhesiveness in the support from community outreach programs and ministries (like DMI) that holds families together.

DMI exemplifies the reality and perception society should have towards one's neighbors. The question "Am I my brother's keeper?" can only be answered when one actively shares and genuinely cares for others. When this type of support and resource is based locally within the community, defeating this monster [poverty] is possible. The need to help fill the void and bring in reinforcements has never been greater than it is today.
